Nearly two acres of willow trees have been cleared at Lang Fen, part of Suffolk Wildlife Trust’s Redgrave and Lopham Fen nature reserve near Diss. Of the willows felled, 50 are destined to be used for cricket bats.

Youth forums are already up and running at the Trust’s visitor centres at Carlton and Lackford Lakes whose members have helped design some of the Trust’s new website.

Seed strips and supplementary feeding have been introduced at the Trust’s Lackford reserve near Bury St Edmunds with impressive results - tree sparrow numbers have increased dramatically and it is hoped they will breed there this season.

Wading birds and ducks are coming under pressure as the freezing conditions across the county tighten their grip. At this time of year waders and wildfowl have to maximise their feeding time by gobbling up as many calories as they can in order to survive. With the freezing conditions estuarine ice can greatly reduce areas of mudflat which contains the juicy morsels the birds feed on.

The support services and construction company Carillion have finished installing five barn owl pole boxes for Suffolk Wildlife Trust in the south and east of Suffolk: on private land in Grundisburgh, at a community woodland in Felixstowe, in community open space at Waldringfield and on two allotments at Capel St Mary.

A two year project to restore 23 hectares of valley fen at Hopton and Thelnetham Fen nature reserves close to the Norfolk-Suffolk border, has been completed by Suffolk Wildlife Trust thanks to funding from SITA Trust. The area restored represents almost 10% of total valley fen in Suffolk.
