Many of our woods have been in existence since the last ice-age and provide the richest places for wildlife. Most of them have been managed in a careful and sustainable way over the centuries to provide woodland products and fuel. Woods often show signs of traditional management which provided an excellent mixture of trees, shrubs and ground plants for wildlife.

Woodlands are one of the most important habitats for wildlife in the UK and Suffolk Wildlife Trust is working hard to ensure that the region's ancient woodlands are protected and sensitively managed. In addition the Trust is supporting landowners and farmers to create new sites that have the potential to sustain a wide range of birds, mammals, invertebrates, reptiles and plant life.

Hedgerows are one of the most important habitats for wildlife and with correct management will support a good variety of birds, small mammals, insects and plants.

Natural regeneration is the best way of creating a new woodland for wildlife and expanding ancient semi natural woodland. Not only is it less expensive than planting up sites, but trees established by regeneration are more likely to be better adapted to local conditions and will result in a more natural composition suited to a variety of wildlife.

More than 20 butterfly species regularly breed in Suffolk on suitable grassland and field edge habitat including species-rich pasture, rough grass margins and nettle patches on field edges and awkward corners, scrub, woodland and hedges.
