Legacy Story: Martlesham Wilds

An incredible opportunity to create a new nature reserve for people and wildlife by the Deben Estuary.

Martlesham Wilds sits within the Suffolk & Essex Coast & Heaths National Landscape and across the River Deben from the burial set of Anglo-Saxon royalty at Sutton Hoo. This is a landscape rich in nature and brimming with history, close to the market town of Woodbridge.

In 2022, a wonderfully generous legacy gift from Pam and George Ford helped us to buy the land and create the new nature reserve.

An organic farm for many years, the land is already home to an array of plants, animals and invertebrates. Protecting this beautiful place and giving nature more space to thrive will back the abundance of wildlife that is missing from our countryside.

Pam and George would be thrilled by the astonishing opportunity that the gift in their wills made possible. Pam and George moved to Walberswick in the seventies. They were hugely passionate about wildlife and the environment and spent their holidays in their camper van enjoying the remotest locations that they could find. Members of Suffolk Wildlife Trust for 35 years we were humbled by the scale of their generosity.
