Farm Wildlife Advice

Our Farm Advisers work with farmers and landowners across Suffolk to create more space for nature while maintaining productive, resilient businesses.


With more than 70% of Suffolk's land farmed, agriculture has a vital role to play in nature's recovery. From hedgerows and meadows to woodlands, ponds and field margins, Suffolk's farmed landscape supports a rich variety of wildlife and habitats.

We provide free advice to farms of all sizes, helping land managers enhance biodiversity, access funding opportunities and navigate environmental grant schemes. We also lead and support a number of Farm Clusters, including Wool Towns, Blyth Valley, Stour Valley, Upper Deben and Upper Gipping.

MEET THE TEAM

Jenny Rawson

Raised in Suffolk, Jenny spent her early years helping with sheep at Foxburrow Farm and she's passionate about local wildlife and the role of landscape-scale conservation. She studied Geography at the University of Plymouth before beginning her career as an ecological surveyor.

Before joining Suffolk Wildlife Trust, Jenny worked at Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust for 10 years where she led conservation management across 20 nature reserves, including woodland, wetland and grassland habitats. Jenny has extensive ecological knowledge and a strong understanding of managing productive farmland for nature.

MEET THE TEAM

Helen Bynum

Seeking a more immediate connection with nature and farming, Helen joined the Farm Advice team in 2024 following a career in academia and as an author.

Her passion is helping Suffolk's farmers work with nature in ways that benefit wildlife, the environment, their farming businesses and the food we eat. She has an MSc in Applied Ecology & Conservation and is BASIS (Sustainable Land Management) qualified.

  • Pond creation, restoration and management
  • Support with scope and set up of new Farm Cluster groups
  • Guidance and advice on environmentally-sound farming practices
  • Guidance and advice on applications to environmental land management scheme

The fees of these services are donated to Suffolk Wildlife Trust.

  • Countryside Stewardship applications (Wildlife packages, Mid tier, or Higher tier)
  • Other funding applications e.g. woodland grant applications, Farming in Protected Landscapes, England Woodland Creation Offer
  • For farmers in Upper Waveney Valley and Stour Valley, you can get involved with DEFRA-funded Landscape Recovery Projects: Waveney & Little Ouse Landscape Recovery (WaLOR) and Connecting Gainsborough & Constable Country (CCGC)
