About the event

The Autumn Palette

This autumn, join botanical illustrator and experienced tutor, Ruth Wharrier, on an exploration of autumn's spectacular palette of colours. Looking at seasonal subjects, Ruth will guide participants in colour identification, exact colour matching and step by step watercolour techniques. The focus will be on observational drawing and painting and achieving a 3D effect through the building of colour.

Some experience with watercolour is preferable. Participants will bring their own watercolours. Subjects are included and Hot Pressed Watercolour paper available from Ruth.

Participants will need to bring the following materials (not included in cost of course):

A range of drawing pencils (student sets are fine)
Pencil sharpener
Putty Rubber
Plastic Eraser
Smooth, heavy weight cartridge paper
HP watercolour paper – available from Ruth
Watercolour set (Artist's quality preferable)
Sable watercolour brushes no.1,2,4,6. - available from Ruth
Ceramic palette (a white plate is fine)
Kitchen Roll
NB Many students bring a notebook to jot down information.


In order to run courses safely while the COVID-19 pandemic is still in effect, there are a number of restrictions put in place, which are in the best interest of our participants, staff and volunteers. We appreciate you following the guidelines we have set out.

More detailed information will be outlined in your confirmation email once you have booked onto the session, however, it is important that you read and agree to the following information before you book onto the session.

  • During the session you will be required to socially distance from other households at the Government recommended 2m. This includes households that you may know. It is your responsibility to be aware of your proximity to others. 
  • All participants will be required to use sanitising hand gel on arrival. This will be provided by us and will be available for you to use throughout the day. 
  • If you or a member of your household is showing ANY signs or symptoms of COVID-19, or you have been told by NHS Test and Trace to isolate, you must not attend the session.
  • You will be required to wear a face covering throughout the course. This can be provided if you do not have access to one.

Any equipment provided for use will be cleaned after the course and, where possible, any equipment that is provided, will not be shared between participants.
