About the event

Once widespread in Britain, the White-tailed Eagle was last seen here in 1780 before reintroduction programmes, led by the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation and Forestry England saw these magnificent birds return to our shores.

Many parts of southern England remain highly suitable for the species and following the reintroduction of White-tailed Eagles to Scotland – where there are now approximately 180 breeding pairs – the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation were granted licences by Natural England and Nature Scot to begin an English reintroduction in partnership with Forestry England, based on the Isle of Wight.

The initial licence permitted the release of up to 60 young eagles on the Isle of Wight over a five-year period, beginning in 2019 and the project has now been extended to include the release of a small number in Exmoor National Park.

A total of 45 eagles have already been released through the project and in 2023 a pair bred successfully for the first time, with birds spreading east and west along the South Coast.

More recently, the sight of white-tailed eagles in Suffolk demonstrates the success of these first reintroductions.

Zoe Smith of the Roy Dennis Foundation will share updates about the reintroduction programme and the lives of these incredible creatures, with Suffolk raptor rehabilitator Peter Merchant updating us on the eagles that have been visiting Suffolk.
