The return of nature's water engineers.
Beavers are the engineers of the animal world. As they exhibit their natural damming behaviour, they restore and manage wetland ecosystems that:
- Reduce the impacts of flooding
- Reduce river pollution
- Improve water quality
- Restore habitats for wildlife
After a 400-year absence from Britain's landscapes, and many of years of campaigning from The Wildlife Trusts, the Government approved the reintroduction of beavers in Feburary 2025.
At Suffolk Wildlife Trust, we support the reintroduction of beavers because of the huge benefits they can bring to both nature and people. However, beaver reintroduction must be done carefully, with thorough research and long-term management plans to support the best possible outcomes.
