Ragged robin at Hen Reedbeds – Jamie Smith 

Catch up on the latest news from our nature reserves. This week’s wildlife highlights have been glow worms, nightjar, silver studded blue butterflies, a kestrel hunting and a Chinese water deer fawn.

Blaxhall Common is a haven for heathland specialist species, with silver studded blues, nightjar and glow worms all recorded this week.

Doe and fawn

Warden Gavin Durrant shared this footage of a Chinese water deer fawn suckling from mum on Peto’s Marsh at Carlton. 

Kestrel on the hunt

This kestrel was caught on camera catching and eating a dragonfly at Carlton Marshes. 

Antlions and flowers at Foxburrow

Foxburrow Nature Reserve is wonderful at this time of year with wildflowers and insects galore including the rare ant lion – look out for their pits under the steps to the office. 

Easy access

Warden Rachel Norman and her wonderful volunteers replaced an old gate with a wider gate to ease access at Newbourne Springs.  

Orchids and ragged robin

Hill Farm Marshes (part of Hen Reedbeds) is looking fantastic after restoration cuts and aftermath grazing the last few years. We recommend visiting for a great show of southern marsh orchid and ragged robin.

Warden Lewis Yates was delighted to observe the lapwing chicks doing very well at Castle Marshes this week, he was also rewarded with this idyllic view!

Bramble is buzzing

Flowering bramble at Hen Reedbeds providing a wonderful food source for an array of insects. This highlights the important role bramble plays for our insects. *Listen for the buzzing

Kissing gate

Warden Jamie Smith and his team have been busy repairing a kissing gate and field gate at Darsham Marshes this week. The recent dry weather has made getting around so much easier on the reserve and the perfect opportunity for jobs like this!
