Work Experience Blog - learning about different jobs at Suffolk Wildlife Trust

Common storksbill and early forget-me-not haze at Lackford – Joe Bell-Tye

Our Work Experience student, Poppy, tells us about everything she got up to during her work experience week in August.

Suffolk Wildlife Trust offers a very unique schedule across the time you spend with them. On the first day we helped out with the holiday camp for kids aged 6 to 12. This was interesting to see the different activities they offer for the kids and the interactions with nature. For example, we did a bug hunt. Learning and engaging is very key at Suffolk Wildlife trust.

On the second day we had a meeting with Jamey, Digital Marketing officer, and learnt how Lackford Lakes acquires their audience and through what platforms. After the meeting we helped out the Wild Tots group.

In the afternoon we prepared for the exciting upcoming event, the Eco Fair. I produced a fun fact sheet on Hedgehogs for the Hedgehog stand and make signs for the front of the test centre.

On the third day we went out and set up a Malaise Trap (A Malaise trap is a tent-like structure used to trap flying insects) which I found very interesting. This was part of Suffolk Wildlife Trust's Buzz Map project - find out more here!

In the afternoon we worked with the conservation team to produce material for a natural fence that is going up on one of the walks. I found this job very fun and felt comfortable doing the hands-on jobs, being outside in the beautiful Sunshine.

On the last day we collected the bugs from the Malaise Trap and started plating them ready to be sent to a lab to be tested for e.g., Parasites. This took a very long time but was interesting as we got to identify some of the bugs that were big enough.

Overall, I found the experience at Lackford Lakes very enjoyable, and it opened my eyes to the opportunities Suffolk Wildlife Trust offers.

I recommend volunteering for this work experience even if you don’t particularly think you’d want to go into this field of work. It is very delightful and lovely to know you are doing your bit for the local wildlife. Thank you to the team at Lackford Lakes for being so welcoming, it has been a pleasure.
