We're delighted to welcome local artist, Nicola Coe, as Foxburrow nature reserve’s artist in residence.

Nicola will be studying the changing landscape at Foxburrow throughout her residency. In 2021, farming ceased at Foxburrow and Nicola’s residency is a wonderful opportunity to help capture nature reclaiming these former arable fields. Throughout the residency, there will be a series of creative workshops and meet the artist sessions, available to book via our website.

Nicola comments, "I make art about nature for nature. I make most of my work in the studio but seem to do all my thinking outside in the landscape. I notice, I collect natural finds and I write down my creative ideas in my mind. I work with many mediums as a multi-disciplinary artist and choose those which I feel best compliments the subject matter I am attempting to highlight or portray."

"I carefully consider each medium, I make sure, as far as I am able, that my creativity avoids both polluting nature and the environment as well as questioning the sustainability of both my work and the mediums used to create it. Over the past few years I have become more and more concerned with conservation. I feel very strongly that my work is heading in a direction that may be able to highlight issues with native species and habitat loss."

Nicola’s residency will begin with a pop-up exhibition of artworks made in response to the nesting birds of Foxburrow. The exhibition will be open every day 10am-2pm, from Saturday 11 February until Sunday 19 February 2023.

Nicola will also be presenting a special webinar on the beautiful Birds’ Nests that have inspired much of her work, sharing her knowledge of these incredible fragile structures garnered over years from her keen observation and providing details of how they are made; which birds build what and where. This webinar takes place on Tuesday, March 7th at 7pm via zoom.
