The BBC's Wild Isles 'Grasslands' episode features rabbit and buzzard interactions at our Lackford Lakes nature reserve.

Following in the footsteps of other high quality and hugely popular natural history programmes by the BBC, Wild Isles is presented by Sir David Attenborough.

The five-part series exclusively features the wildlife of Britain and Ireland, revealing the surprising and dramatic wildlife that exists right on our doorstep. It also stresses the importance and urgency of protecting these increasingly diminishing habitats and species.

The Wildlife Trusts are delighted to have enabled filming of Wild Isles across several of our nature reserves, and the third episode, ‘Grasslands’ features some footage taken at Lackford Lakes. Award-winning photographer and filmmaker Simon King spent many hours at the reserve capturing stunning daytime footage of rabbits and buzzards.

On the higher ground, our dry, sandy, Breckland landscape is perfect for rabbits, who keep the grass sward well nibbled. In the summer months, the rare stone curlew can be spotted in the open landscape as well as turtle dove. The grasslands are also home to specialist plants such as stonecrops and bedstraws as well as species of lichens and mosses.

Will Cranstoun, West Suffolk Sites Manager comments, “It was a fantastic opportunity to work with the BBC and filmmaker Simon King. The filming helped us get a deeper insight into the interactions of species on this part of the reserve, Pipits meadow. It showcases what a fantastic space for nature Lackford Lakes is”.

You can watch the programme on Sunday 26th March at 7pm on BBC One, or catch-up later on BBCiPlayer.
