National volunteer week - Steff Jones' story

Rob Wilton

This week is Volunteers’ Week and, over the course of the week, we are going to be celebrating the fantastic difference our volunteers make for wildlife in Suffolk. In the past year, over 1360 volunteers have contributed nearly 68300 hours of volunteering time. THANK YOU for your time, knowledge, skills, experience, energy and enthusiasm. We couldn’t achieve a fraction of what we do without you.

I started volunteering with Suffolk Wildlife Trust in July 2011. After finishing my degree and returning to Suffolk I was looking for opportunities to do something hands-on and positive for the environment. With Carlton Marshes Nature Reserve not far from my home and having been a member of what was then called Wildlife Watch Club as a child, I got in touch to enquire about volunteering opportunities. After discussing my skills and experience we agreed that leading the monthly Weekend Wildlife Club would be great fit for me. I was put in touch with the other ladies running the club and the rest, as they say, is history!

Since then we have been creating factual, informal and fun ways for young people and adults to become more aware of the environment and foster an attitude of conservation. Our seasonal, outdoor sessions include a range of activities such as games, craft, bush-craft and experiments alongside classic favourites like pond dipping and building bird boxes. I love planning a session full of creative activities to learn about wildlife and I sometimes wonder who is having more fun - me or the children!

My co-leaders and I have become great friends, we have even been away on holiday and ran a marathon together! The best part is helping to nurture a love of nature in children. Encouraging the next generation of nature lovers makes me feel proud and I have found it hugely rewarding to watch members of the club learn and develop, grow up and ‘graduate’ from the group with a passion for wildlife.

In 2018 I became a member of the board of Trustees for Suffolk Wildlife Trust, another voluntary role that is immensely rewarding. Together with the other Trustees, we are responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction to help manage the charity. We are accountable for making well-informed decisions to help the Trust deliver its vision, acting with prudence and integrity. In 2019 I had the honour of becoming vice chair, providing support to the chair.

Volunteering for Suffolk Wildlife Trust has given me countless excellent experiences. I have developed my skills and knowledge, met many talented and interesting people, and joined a thriving community of committed volunteers and staff.
