About the event
Soil ecoacoustics is a new way to understand life in the soil and especially to try and find out if an area of soil is healthy or unhealthy based on the way it sounds. Without soil there would be no life on earth as we know it. Soil is the most biodiverse terrestrial habitat – a staggering 59% of all life on earth is found in the soil though much of it is invisible to the naked eye. We also know that globally a third of our soils are degraded, so finding ways to better understand what’s happening underground are part of the exciting, urgent challenges we face.
In this webinar Helen will talk about soils, soil health, and her work (with a wonderful team of volunteers) using soil ecoacoustics at Martlesham Wilds. As the Suffolk Wildlife Trust’s new reserve began its transition from organic farm to wildlife haven things were happening below ground as well as above, and we were listening in.
Helen is a farmland adviser for the Trust, who trained as an historian and as a scientist. She has long been fascinated with the natural world and how we can learn more about it.
