Special visit from Lackford founder at reserve's birthday celebrations
Kind words from Lackford Lakes founder Bernard Tickner MBE and a generous gift that brings the Trust a step closer to its fundraising target, was the icing on the cake for reserve staff and volunteers as they welcomed visitors to the birthday celebrations.
The September sun shone down on the lakes as hundreds of visitors were invited to try their hand at lake dipping, bird ringing and moth identification. Familiar faces and first-time visitors were amongst those who joined in the celebrations at the Trust’s flagship nature reserve on the outskirts of Bury St Edmunds.
As the former gravel pit turned wildlife haven reaches 30, the Trust has an opportunity to purchase 77 acres of land adjacent to the existing site. A fundraising appeal to raise £200,000 towards this purchase now sits just shy of £179,000! The new land will extend the reserve towards the village of Lackford and it is hoped the habitat will attract greater numbers of Breckland specialists such as stone curlew.
