It's Heating Up at Lackford Lakes

It's Heating Up at Lackford Lakes

The hot dry weather continues at Lackford, but it doesn’t stop the wildlife. We are gald to report that a young pair of kingfishers have been seen around Hawker pool and showing some interest in the nesting bank. Time will tell if they will start a late brood, so it’s just a matter of keeping our fingers crossed. Elsewhere on the reserve green sandpiper has been seen visiting Jason’s pool, two to three hobby are often spotted hunting over the sailing lake and The Slough.

A pair of red kites are becoming regular visitors to the reserve and are often seen over the fields at the entrance to the reserve. Oystercatchers, lapwing, common terns, little egret, pochard and tufted ducks can be seen at various places around the reserve too. Reed bunting and reed warblers can be spotted flitting around the reeds from the visitor centre or viewing platform whilst enjoying the sun. In the cool shade of Ash carr blackcap, nuthatch and treecreeper can be found.

The hot weather has favoured the insects well with lots of dragonflies and damselflies to be seen such as emperor, brown hawker, black-tailed skimmer, blue-tailed, common blue, azure and the amazing banded demoiselle.

Butterflies to look out for include meadow brown, small copper, red admiral, painted lady, small tortoiseshell, brimstone, Essex skipper, small skipper, large skipper and gatekeeper.
