Late spring at the Lakes

Late spring at the Lakes

swifts over the slough

Now we are into May, we enter late spring at the lakes. The spring birds have arrived and the reserve is full of bird song from nightingales to swifts screaming overhead. Added to the birds singing we are now starting to see lots of butterflies and insects around. We have also see lots of large red damselfly emerging. As we go through this month we should see more and more insects on the reserve and the first dragonflies of the year emerging.

Update on Sunday 28th May

This past week has been largely settled and warm.  Meaning that many of our dragonflies and damselflies are now beginning to be seen on the wing.  Damselfly - clouds of common blue damselfly have now joined the large red damselflies around the reserve.  Dragonflies - many now about like four spot chaser, hairy dragonfly and broad-bodied chaser.

A few more butterflies like common blue, brown argus and small heath are now on the wing as well - try the red trail over Sayer's Breck for these.

Bird wise - many are now feeding young around the reserve so they will be busy collecting food.  Our blue tits have fledged (the ones on the camera) and our swifts are now on eggs (also on camera).  Ruddy shelduck has been around again on the slough.  Bird of prey wise - red kite, buzzard, hobby and marsh harrier have been around.  Otherwise - see list above.
