Timeline of our partnership with Southwold Primary School
21st October 2024
This was our first session at Southwold Primary. In the morning we worked with KS2 and started off by carrying out an audit of the school grounds and the existing habitats. We measured the size of the playground and counted the number of trees and flowerbeds. We also recorded how many minibeast homes, log piles, nest boxes and pollinator pitstops were already there too. After this, we did a bug hunt to see how many minibeasts we could find as well as a scavenger hunt around the playground to see if we could find specific things such as a 'green item'. We finished the morning by constructing a list of what we would like to add to the school site to improve it for wildlife.
We repeated this session with the KS1 class in the afternoon and they also came up with lots of brilliant ideas of how to improve the school site.

Today we worked with the EYFS class and the session was bird themed. We started by sharing ideas about what we already know about birds and then made bird feeders to hang around the outdoor area of the school. We thought carefully about where was best to place them.
We then had a look to see if we could find any alternate food sources for birds by doing a bug hunt. Sadly we could not find very many insects but we decided this meant that next time we need to create a hotel for insects.
Finally, we planted some sunflowers as we are hoping these will grow and the seeds will become a food source for any visiting birds.
