Your self-led school visit to Carlton Marshes.

Carlton Marshes is an internationally important broadland nature reserve in the Waveney valley. The dykes and pools are teeming with wildlife and there are reed beds, flower rich meadows, marsh and woodland to explore. Your day here will reflect the landscape, habitats and history of Carlton Marshes. 

A usual day runs between 10am and 2.30pm. We are flexible half an hour either side of this. Price per pupil is £2.50. All equipment, instructions and a map will be provided on arrival. A link to downloadable resources will be provided on confirmation of your booking. 

Ratio requirement - For children aged two and under we require you to provide a ratio of 1 adult : 4 pupils. For children aged three and over we require a ratio of 1 adult : 6 pupils.

Invertebrates 

An exciting way to investigate habitats, life cycles, learn about classification and how to observe animals closely.
Pupils can use magnifiers and ID sheets to help them identify and sort animals according to the number of legs they have, introducing them to the basics of classification. Early years pupils will follow the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, discuss the lifecycle and what caterpillars really feed on. Hunt for caterpillars and other invertebrates.

Dykes 

An exciting way to investigate habitats, life cycles, learn about classification and how to closely observe animals. Pupils will learn how to identify aquatic invertebrates that they may be unfamiliar with. All equipment required, including pond nets, white trays, viewers and identification sheets, will be provided.

Plants 

An opportunity to investigate the life cycles of plants and the role of pollinators and learn about the function of different parts of the plant through games and activities. Pupils will look at the variety and diversity of flowering plants in the marsh habitat.

Trees 

an opportunity to discover trees by looking up close at the texture of the bark, leaf shapes and the animals living on them. Pupils can discuss the difference between deciduous and evergreen species (KS1 & 2) and creatively use natural materials to make artwork in the style of Andy Goldsworthy.

Nature Walk

Explore further afield on this magnificent nature reserve, observing the wildlife, exploring the habitats and visiting some of the viewing structures for a very special nature experience.
