Week 1 - Help Nature Where I Live

Nature and wildlife help take care of us, from bees pollinating the plants that we eat (like tomatoes!) to trees and woodlands shading us and keeping us cool in the heat, our natural world improves our everyday lives. So, it’s nice to give back and act for nature too.

Make your own garden bird feeder

A bird feeder doesn’t need to be an expensive fancy thing from a store, you can create your own at home using easily found materials like pinecones or old yoghurt pots. Make sure to hang your bird feeders in good views of your windows, so you can enjoy watching the birds enjoy the snacks you have made for them.

Sign a petition or host a fundraiser

Your voice can make a big difference for wildlife. There are lots of different causes that you can support to help make a difference for nature. From petitioning for better health in our rivers, to helping wildlife thrive on a nature reserve.

This June we're encouraging communities to help bring back nature in Suffolk with fundraisers inspired by the colour green. Host a bake sale, take on a sponsored walk or litter pick! The options are endless, and all funds raised can help support vital conservation work in our county. Find out more about the Big Green Fundraiser

Go on a litter pick

We all know litter can pose a big problem to our wildlife, it can get caught and create a choking hazard and even poison some wildlife. By going on a litter pick or beach clean you are a wildlife hero, helping save countless animals from the negative effects of litter.

Pick a spot where you would like to start your litter pick, this could be around your neighbourhood, near a special site for wildlife like a Site of Specific Scientific Interest (SSSI) or nature reserve, or along the coastline. Check out the guide below for an equipment list and safe practices. Make sure to wear gloves and wash your hands when you’re done!

Build a bug hotel

Insects are an important part of many ecosystems, helping pollinate plants and acting as a food source for other species, as well as just being really cool! You can help them out by building them cosy places to live.

Did you know, some insects lay their eggs in water? If you have the space why not make a mini pond to go alongside your bug hotel.

Week 2 - Move Like Wildlife

Connect with wildlife in a new way, discover how different species move and behave with some fun activities for the whole family. If dancing isn’t for you why not try and epic walk to mimic the migration of a cuckoo from central Africa to Suffolk or get in tune with your local woodland through a guided forest bathing session.

Wildlife yoga

Bend and stretch like a lizard, open your arms wide like a butterfly! What poses can you come up with inspired by wildlife around you? Try some of these for inspiration:

Dance like wildlife

Want to make your stretching wildlife poses go further? What would you do if they became dance moves? How do you think heron would move to a waltz, or a slug to some pop music. Make up your dance moves and show off how nature grooves!

Explore wild places with a long walk

Cuckoos migrate over 18,000KM each year to spend their summers in the UK. Their journey takes them weeks at a time, sometimes even months, and can be perilous. What’s the longest journey you’ve ever made? Could you challenge yourself to walk a long distance in nature and pretend to be an animal making an important journey?

Nature reserves with visitor facilities and good walks:

Carlton Marshes - Walk around the reserve or venture along the Angles Way footpath towards Worlingham Marshes (where two cuckoos were tagged for tracking last summer).

Lackford Lakes - Visitor centre and coffee shop with great views and 4 miles of trails

Reserves with good walking routes:

Arger Fen and Spouse's Vale, Bradfield Woods, Knettishall Heath, Redgrave and Lopham Fen, Trimley Marshes, Martlesham Wilds

Explore all nature reserves

Try forest bathing

Not all nature moves fast, learn the rhythm of the trees and wind with a spot of forest bathing. The Tree Council has an audio guide that can help you with this activity.

Week 3 - Learn about wildlife

Wildlife is amazing, there are so many cool behaviours to learn about – like the magnificent caddisfly larvae which builds its own protective shell from debris in a pond – and there are so many fun ways to learn too!

Go pond dipping

Discover an underwater world with pond dipping. Using your equipment carefully scoop up water-dwellers and get a closer look at the world beneath the surface.

Try shadow tracing

On a sunny day why not visit a local green space and find some interesting plants to trace and create a unique work of art!

Simply place your paper or sketchbook under the object so it casts a shadow on the page and trace around with your chosen medium, it could be pencil, pen or even watercolour! Play around with over lapping shadows and building up interesting compositions.
